How Important Is It to Change Your Filters?

You’ve most likely heard that you should regularly change your filters, but why does it really matter? Well, there are a lot of reasons. Take a look at the photos on this page. These are from a few recent “no heat” service calls that our technicians responded to throughout the Puget Sound Region. All of these could have been avoided with just a simple filter change.

If you have questions about how to change your air filters—or how often you should be changing them—give the HVAC professionals at AAA Heating & Air Conditioning a call at (253) 234-1278 today!

Why Should You Change Your Air Filters?

Our technicians often visit homes where filters have not been changed since the last time we came out for a service call. Sometimes, we even find filters that haven’t been changed in years! This puts your system at risk for a wide variety of problems that can be much more expensive, troublesome, and time consuming than a simple filter change.

A common result of neglecting the filters in your Kent, WA home is the overheating of mechanical parts, such as the blower motor or pressure switches. These are several hundred dollar repair costs that could have been avoided quite easily. In some cases, the filter can be changed and suddenly your furnace works again!

However, even if that happens, we highly recommend that you schedule a preventative maintenance and safety inspection with a certified technician. This will ensure there are no lingering consequences. Even if your furnace is running for just a few days with a clogged filter, it could lead to some serious damages.

When Should You Change Your Filters?

To be on the safe side, it’s important to change your filters every one to three months. If you are doing construction on your home, or you have a high amount of dust or dirt in the area for any reason, it won’t hurt to check it more often. Also, if you are part of our Priority Customer Membership, you can receive free 1” paper replacement filters if you bring your old filter into our office! We’d love for you to stop in and say hello as you pick up a clean filter for your home in the Kent, WA area.

Consequences of Not Regularly Replacing Your Filters

Here dust residue built up inside the furnace due to the filter not being changed for over a year. This caused several mechanical issues in the furnace and became a potential safety hazard.

A heavily clogged filter eventually led to blower motor failure. This is very common. See dust caked on the motor.
